Teacher and Student in Ontario

Hello, I’m Elaine. I’m a Secondary School LTO teacher living in Ontario; currently teaching ESL Math and Computer Tech courses.

I am a fan of traveling, food, and music. I’m also interested in swimming and education.

I did my Bachelor Degree in Physics as well as teacher education back home in China-- a not very famous city called Huaian, in Jiangsu Province. Coming from a different part of the world, I have experienced challenges in navigating my life in Canada all by myself. For now, I am finishing up my first LTO in a HS and starting my second one the day after in an Elementary school; both of the schools are welcoming more and more immigrant families and ELLs. In my current ESL Math class, we have 19 students from 7 different countries, with 5 different first languages. Several of them just arrived a few months or even a couple weeks ago. I feel the need to take this course, so I can learn more about how to support ELLs who have unique backgrounds and various levels of English.

Apart from teaching this ESL-Math course, I have also tutored adults who are learning English to come to Canada for higher education, or are new to Canada for elementary school.

(In the past two weeks, I learnt from OCT that in order to convert my Chinese teaching license to Ontario, I will need another ABQ course(Senior Math), in addition to a 20-day Practicum.

So far, I have not got any luck in finding a Faculty of Education that will take me to complete the 20-day Practicum(including the one at Queen's University), even though I have no problem in matching with mentors at my board, who are experienced teachers that I have been working with. If you guys know anyone who's been having the same challenge, or know any Faculty of Ed that might be able to oversee a practicum and send required paperwork to OCT, please send me an email or text; I very much appreciate any information that might be helpful.)
