Safety of outdoor lighting

Holidays will never be the same without outdoor lighting. It even makes one neighborhood stand out, especially if most homes have decked their homes with colorful holiday lights. As for all year round outdoor lighting, it accentuates the beauty of a property’s landscaping, and helps homeowners enjoy the outdoors for relaxation and entertaining visitors.

The Electrical Contractors Association of San Diego (ECASD) however reminds residents that outdoor lights can also spur electrical accidents. “When not installed properly, it can be disastrous. Only a licensed electrician should install outdoor receptacles, and homeowners should never misuse and overload these,” says James Jacobson, President of the ECASD.

The ECASD says outdoor lights are designed to weather outdoor conditions like snow, rains, and heavy winds. For this reason, it requires a different type of receptacle, and corresponding protection for it. Electricial Repair Contractors Association

One receptacle is required within the perimeter of each balcony, deck, porch, or patio that is accessible from the inside of the home.”
