SDEA calls on homeowners to be proactive against electrical fires

The San Diego Electrician’s Association (SDES) is calling on San Diego residents to take a pro-active stance when it comes to electrical fire prevention. The SDEA says much of the prevention aspect lies on the homeowners themselves as they are the ones who can see the red flags and the first signs of electrical problems.

The SDES says information is crucial when it comes to electrical fire prevention. According to the electrical association, the homeowners need to be aware of what constitutes an electrical issue that could lead to electrical fires.

Moreover, the Association says it is important that homeowners have a ready contact with their trusted electrician so that at the first sign of trouble, they would know whom to call.

Electrical Fires continue to be one of the top sources of home fires. The National Fire Protection Association or NFPA says electrical fires continue to claim lives during fire incidents. This as the NFPA shared in their website data on electrical fire incidences in the United States.

“U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 45,210 reported U.S. home

structure fires involving electrical failure or malfunction in 2010-2014. These fires resulted in

420 civilian deaths, 1,370 civilian injuries and $1.4 billion in direct property damage each year.

Some type of electrical failure or malfunction also contributed to the ignition of 16,070 non-home structure fires during this period, resulting in an estimated annual average of 12 civilian

deaths, 210 civilian injuries, and $614 million in direct property damage.”

The Energy Education Council through their website SafeElectricity.org has shared safety tips to prevent electrical fires at home. According to them, a huge chunk of home accidents that result to injury or deaths are caused by electrical fires and electrical shocks.

“Create a safer home by making a check for electrical fire and shock hazards: (1) Electrical outlets— Check for loose–fitting plugs, which can be a shock or fire hazard. Replace missing or broken wall plates so wiring and components are not exposed. If you have young children in the home, check that unused outlets are covered. (2) Plugs —Never force them into outlets.”
