This would not have been a problem if I may...

Last week I was driving and found myself in a road paving project area. This was a project on a road with 1/2 of the two shelves on my side paved... and one other 1/2 getting prepared for paving to carry on. The problem is that the 1/2 that was provided was the left lane and this caused a height difference "ridge" of approximately 1 - 2 inches of asphalt between the two lanes (of course I was in the right "low-side" lane).

This might not have been an issue if I could have stayed in the street I was in... but once into the paving region all vehicles had to mix from the right to the left lane. Speeds on this road were about 40 miles per hour and on a normal motorcycle this would have been scary enough! On a chopper (aside from a broad back tire) it was one of the scariest things I've had to complete. In the moment before the change I tried to decrease as much as I could in the "bumper to bumper" traffic, held the bars tightly, and then once there was an opening in the traffic to move over I tried to make the "cut" at as sharp of an angle as was possible.

Let me just say that "I made it" but it was an unstable condition for a few moments. It made me recall why Driver Education schools educate you on that "if your tire goes off the road... Keep off the trail and slow way down... and then deliberately turn back on if you find a safe margin to do so" and that is in a 4-wheel CAR!

I genuinely believe that was the closest I've come to "going down" on a bicycle in over 20 years... so, I am writing this down so I don't forget. To get supplementary information, consider checking out: here. When you yourself have to go over and onto a ridge that is running parallel to your path of travel:

Decelerate up to possible (used to do not do that enough).

Obtain a large protection margin between other traffic (Watch for a large opening).

Try to cross-over the ridge at a strong direction (don't try to help relieve through to the ridge).
