Elisabeth Shackelford

Atlanta, GA

Elisabeth Shackelford is the author of a novel, Don't Sit Here. Don't Sit Here was nominated for a Pushcart Editors' Book Award and a PEN/Revson Fiction Foundation Fellowship Award. The opening chapter was published in The Greensboro Review. Other chapters have been accepted by Boulevard, Raritan, and Confrontation.

Shackelford is at work on a new, humor-based nonfiction fitness book, LARD: Have Mercy. The book is for all people over fifty whose parents never warned them about the Bonus 35, the creeping thickening about the waist as soon as one turns 50. You thought it was bad enough that you had to find out the truth about Santa Claus. Just wait.

LARD: Have Mercy will become a live, multi-media communal weight loss effort under the idea that the principle business of life is to enjoy it -- if you just lean into what you love, it all works out, so goes the theory. The LARD recipe calls for exercise or dance six days a week, travel to places you adore, time with the people you love, and a budget that doesn't send you to the refrigerator every five minutes in search of emergency anti-anxiety comfort food.

Shackelford has a third book-in-the-works, Xocomil, Wash Away, Wash Away. This book, nonfiction, chronicles the ingenuity, creativity, love and courage of the indigenous Maya as they cope with 7 stressors that threaten their beautiful watershed, Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala.
