I like the ocean, dancing, mornings, cycling, polaroids, learning, slacklining, longboarding, travelling, expressing my creativity and meeting new people. To all of my good friends: I know that we were once strangers and to all of the strangers: I know that we can be good friends. I was travelling to the mainland from Martha's Vineyard one day this summer. The wind was coming from the North so the swells were high and we were packed like sardines in the tiny passenger ferry. I was sitting next to the salt covered window fixed on the current Game of Thrones saga. I looked up where a woman sat right in front of me. She said "Is that where you work or do you just wear the hat?" I smiled and said "No, I actually work here" referring to the Yacht Club where I had taken up a position as sailing instructor a few years prior. Soon afterward, I was telling this woman of my majors in Marketing and Environmental Geography at the University of Massachusetts and my plans to combine the two. One of my career goals is to come up with a plan to market sustainability. People often tell me that's an odd combination of studies but this woman did not. I had come to find out that she was developing a plan to market sustainability on the island. Her project is the "Sustainable Vineyard Map," promoting eco-tourism and a self sufficient island. I now intern with Meredith* working to get funding for this project. I am happy to have found work that allows me to utilize my passion for sustainability and creativity. A seemingly odd combination of majors has proved to be a great decision and I am excited about the future of the project. I love meeting new people and exploring their likes, dislikes and passion. We all have our stories to tell and I am one to listen. I learn so much from others and I believe that is one key to enjoying life.
