This picture reminds me of how much I love and miss my dog. She passed away at 15 years old only a few months after my neighbor took this picture.
Notice how I am holding her as gently as I can, but my hands are clenched because my heart knew I could not keep her there anymore than I could hold the air in place or the time still.
But, I am a storyteller, among many other things. And memory is the tool of my medium. Storytelling is an ancient skill practiced to pass what was from who is to those who will be.
So, yeah, she is passed, as we all will in our time, but the joy sparked by a furry mischievous being who could open locked doors and car windows, who liked to sit pressed to my side in the middle of our tiny grimy city front lawn to watch the world spin? Of she who was the bane of squirrels everywhere and the sworn enemy of the evil grey cat of Williamsburg, VA? That joy remains in this world.
