The background photo is of a muqarnas dome found in Alhambra (southern Spain). In Islamic architecture, domes evolved as leaders in the faith evolved their understanding of the divine. This dome was created at a time when followers recognized the complexity and occasional elusiveness of allah. It is constructed to let light through, but never in a direct manner. In an ever changing world, our own understanding of place and people is continually morphing. It is our job as urbanists to redefine and create the built environment that best represents what we have learned from the most recent decades.
