Evelyn McCorkle
What started as days and weeks is now months, months that I have been on and off campus, in classes, and experiencing life as a student in the Honors Program at University of Washington. While my goals and interests have stayed true, and my desire to major in Economics and International Studies is unwavering, I have found myself changing and growing in other ways. I hope I am right in saying that I am a more complete person here, striving in all areas of life for improvement and fulfillment whether it is in classes, in clubs and organizations, or in my explorations of the city and life outside the University.
Since the start of fall quarter I have joined the UW Young Democrats chapter, with whom I have phone banked and canvassed for the issues I believe in, I have joined the UW Model United Nations club, and have applied for and received the position of Assistant director for the WASMUN organization. I have learned about finance and the international economic relationships in my Husky Finance Traders club, and have edited for the Jackson School Journal of International Studies. In classes I have learned more in two months than I would have thought possible, and I look forward to the array of courses I will take in the future. While not academic, I think some of the social and cultural events and activities I have participated in have been particularly formative in my time so far in Seattle. I have gotten to see plays put on the Seattle Theatre Company; I have gotten to explore the city seeing concerts, films, and exhibits.
I hope that my time here will prepare me for a transition into the life I desire; a meaningful life doing things that interest me, challenge me, and hopefully, benefit both myself and others. I hope also that through the upcoming years at UW, in the honors program and in life in general, that I will be able to grow as a person, and reflect on what my time here has meant to me personally and to others.
