Emerald City One

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

We are proposing that 1% of the square footage of all new construction be set aside for green space. If one percent of all new building construction, commercial and residential, was dedicated to green space we could increase the green space by 50% in a city in just a number of years. Expanding existing building codes for any municipality by requiring any proposed new construction to include one percent of its square footage for renewable green space would do this. This space could be more than ornamental, it could be agricultural or recreational as well.

It is our belief that the elected officials that would implement such a sweeping idea using existing building codes would be an exemplar for the nation to replicate, and have a lasting effect on generations to come, somewhat like when President Reagan signed in the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has effected millions of Americans to date.
