Emily Baird
Hi! My name's Emily and I'm a Coach at HSC CoWorks, Bondi.
I went to Sydney Girls High School and graduated in the class of 2013. For the HSC I took English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Drama, Biology and Latin. Thanks to a balanced approach to my studies and a genuine love of learning I achieved an ATAR of 97.45. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education/Bachelor of Arts at University of Sydney, and absolutely loving it.
Without doubt my favourite parts of the HSC were my two major works. Drama has always been a huge part of my life and I revelled in the opportunity to have this skill contribute to my HSC. My experience in HSC drama also influenced my decision to major in Performance Studies at university for the purpose of becoming a high school drama teacher upon graduation. My second major work was for English Extension 2 and this project grew into something I never could have imagined at the beginning of the course. If only I knew then that performance poetry would not only gain me a nomination for Young Writers Showcase but would also become a huge part of my life after school. I now regularly attend poetry slams and have been featured as an artist at the Enough Said Poetry Slam, Art Party and I've got a few more gigs lined up at other Sydney poetry events. Something that students so often overlook is that the HSC can be a wonderful opportunity to learn new things about the world at large and even themselves, and if you allow it, year 12 can be a lot more than a means to an end.
My ultimate professional goal is to be able to combine my three passions: teaching, acting and poetry. I know that sounds a bit insane but I think all the best dreams are, and I can't wait to make mine happen.
I'm so thankful that HSC CoWorks has given me the opportunity to work with such inspired kids. Their commitment and intelligence continually astound me and I consider it a privilege to facilitate them in achieving their HSC goals.
