Emily Housden

Basingstoke, Hampshire

I have always wanted to be a journalist and I can always remember pretending to interview family members and write meaningless articles when I was about five. Now, it's serious and my small interest has become a big longing to be involved in the world of journalism.

I have already written articles for a magazine called the ‘Portsmouth People’ which has a readership of around 15,000 and I have often been chosen as a youth writer to cover events or other issues surrounding the magazines genre.

I was the editor of my school magazine which meant I was the overseeer of all articles going into the magazine and I also had the job of writing articles myself.

During college, I wrote articles for my local paper ‘The Gazette’ about local interests such as local bands from Basingstoke.

I’ve completed work experience at the Bournemouth Echo newspaper. In my work experience there, I learnt quickly and met deadlines. I was capable of any task I was given, for example laying out a page for the newspaper and taking photographs to accompany articles. I was even given the chance to sit in on an editor’s meeting and share my own ideas which were taken into consideration by the editors.

I have also had various jobs in retail and insurance which have given me knowledge about the work place and I have developed a good work ethic over the years. In 2014, I also travelled around Australia on my gap year so I have great people skills from meeting people from all over the world which I feel would definitely help me in the career of a journalist.

I am currently just starting my first year as an under-graduate at Oxford Brooke's studying English Language and Communication.
