Emily Green (Cardwell)
Student in Indianapolis, Indiana
My name is Emily Green (recently married hence the Cardwell in parentheses). I am a student in psychology at IUPUI. I am a senior and looking forward to a career in clinical psychology. I will soon be graduating both with my bachelors degree in psychology and a minor in Neuroscience, as I am also very very interested in the function and anatomy of the human brain. I first took an interest in psychology and neuroscience when I was in high school. After experiencing the death of someone very close to me in addition to witnessing mental illness first hand, I became fascinated with the grief process, therapy and recovery.
As to my experience, I have held several positions in service which allowed me a lot of interaction with people. I was a volunteer staff member at my local church for several years, as well. There, I got lots of experience working with children and organizing and participating in charity work and outreach for at risk youth. In addition to this, I spent a semester volunteering at an Indianapolis public elementary school working to help children who struggled with reading. Lastly, I was employed as a nanny for a child being treated for ADHD and Asperger's syndrome. This final work opportunity really helped me to grasp what it means to work with people who may be struggling with a psychological or developmental issue. In the future, I hope to have the opportunity to intern or work in a clinical setting.
When I took the Via Me assessment, there were three traits I scored high in that I thought really described the skills that made me choose this career path: love of learning, creativity and fairness. I would consider myself a very curious person and learning about others and their experiences in life is a driving force for me. I am a person who thinks creatively and strives to find new ways to accomplish a goal. I think this flexibility is a valuable trait in any sort of individual centered profession. Finally, I am able to look at a situation from all perspectives and am typically very impartial when listening to others' opinions. When I took the Strengths Quest Assessment, I got very similar results: ideation, felxibility, input, etc.
In closing, I hope to be the kind of profession with the capability to really make a differences in others lives, to be compassionate and creative in my work. I truly have a passion for this sort of work and love to be a helping hand or ear to listen for anybody in need.
