Emily Usher Shrair
Gender expert in Washington, DC
Who I am:
I am a British-American feminist writer, gender expert, and international development practitioner. I see myself as an intermediary between small grassroots women's organizations and large donors and policymakers. By bridging the gap between women's empowerment on the ground, and gender equality on the level of government policy, I help to foster the mutual trust and understanding that is necessary to change the world for women and girls.
What I do:
I've worked in the field of Gender and International Development since receiving my BA in International Relations and Gender Studies from Mount Holyoke College in 2008. My experience includes two years working with homeless and marginalized women in the slums of Buenos Aires, rural community development in Xilitla, Mexico, and eight years leading communications, development and programme work for women-led NGOs and INGOs. I am the founder and CEO of feminist fundraising collective Girl Got Grants, and job site Feminist Job Board. In 2014, I completed my MA in Gender and Development at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex in on a Fulbright Scholarship.
What I am working on:
I currently serve as the Senior Technical Advisor for Gender Program Design and Resource Mobilization at CARE, based out of Washington DC.
