Emma Epps
Student in Athens, Georgia
Ever since my first biology class, I have been interested in how the human body functions, but I never knew what I could do with that interest. I came to the University of Georgia because I honestly had no idea what I wanted to study, but I believed beginning the path of a pre-med biology major would be a good start. After a few months, I slowly realized that I was not passionate about becoming a medical student, so I sought out to find a subject that I could happily study for years.
I decided to go to an event hosted by the university’s career center with no expectation to actually find something. After taking a personality test, I was shown what types of majors could fit me. I came across the dietetics major, and after a quick look through the classes I would take and the possible job descriptions, something clicked inside of me. From my countless times exploring different options, this was the only time every single class looked interesting to me while also fitting my skill level. It felt as if I finally found the missing piece of me.
I would like to become a registered dietitian that specializes either in a healthcare field or in the field of public education. I mainly want to show people that it’s possible to have both a happy and healthy relationship with food, and that small changes can lead to big results in both mental and physical health. I hope in this way I can do my small part to better others' lives.
