Emma Pettifer
Leeds born Artists Emma Pettifer and mother Jackie Waterhouse showcase an eclectic mix of Portraiture, Impressionism and Abstract in mixed media.
Emma's portraits, charged with evocative power create a psychological space emanating feeling or atmosphere, a world far from the coherence of language. An interplay of realism and dreams, light and shade, surface and content, runs throughout Emma's figurative work all touching on the unquantifiable, nebulous nature of human existence. Emma works predominantly in oils, her process, at first measured precision, a meditation on composition and the mechanics of each brush stroke. The commitment to canvas, in contrast, an exertive, physical torrent like scrambling to hold the thread of a dream upon waking.
Jackie's portraits, explore both traditional and original approaches through intimate images of friends and family alongside portraits of famous faces. Her earlier works, assured, swift, pen sketches showing a fluency and energy of line and a voracity to capture her subject. Later moving into depicting more controlled narrative scenes with the figure still a key element. Intense and dynamic, tumultuous and exuberant colour, Jackie's work continues to affirm painting's urgency exploring the tension between control and chance.
