I have been interested in wider global issues from a young age. My passion for community development and concern for particular groups in society, sparked my interest at the age of 16, to run an after school community sports program for children from low-socio economic backgrounds. Being involved in the program allowed me to mix with diverse members of my local community and develop organisational and management skills.
While completing a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Policy and Research, I volunteered with the Centre for Multicultural Youth, participating in the ‘U Can 2’ Program, which involved monitoring newly arrived refugee youth. Through this program I was able to develop my interpersonal skills in order to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds including different cultures and religions. I then moved on to complete a Masters of Social Science in International Development at RMIT University. During this time, I took part in a Model Global Parliament representing Universities. I developed my public speaking and debating skills, discussing numerous worldwide issues, aiming to achieve the primary goal of setting higher standards for solving global problems, with an assembly that represents the diversity of our international community.
Until recently, I volunteered with Plan International Australia, working alongside the Disability Advisor to review and collaborate on Disability policy and issues. This opportunity provided me the chance to build confidence to share my thoughts and opinions and also develop my professional writing skills. Currently, I work with the not-for-profit organisation AMES, to support migrants and refugees. I am based in a team that works together to encourage employment opportunities for our client base. This role has helped me to develop skills in supporting and motivating individuals who represent a disadvantaged section of the community.
