Erl’s Story
Erl’s professional background spans two fields of work across thirty years. He earned his Bible degree from Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee, where he also studied Computer Science. This theme of spirituality & human nature combined with computer science & networking technology continued to follow his dual career.
Cutting his teeth in mission work, Erl served in townships surrounding Cape Town, South Africa during the final years of apartheid, particularly among the destitute. His pastoral assignments in South Africa, and later in Minnesota, included the rebuilding of blown-out congregations whose remaining toxic members held fiercely to traditions despite dwindling numbers and mounting debt. He found that “ordinary business people” were much more inclined to take on hands-on volunteer work, and he mobilized small armies to work among the poor and destitute, even in the midst of turmoil and violence. This kind of ministry did not lend itself well to providing for his family! And so, Erl worked full-time days in Computer Support and Information Technology. This happened to coincide with the dawn of computer networking, where he was part of the first teams training I.T. professionals in Cisco Routing.
Erl went on to become a skilled trainer and presenter by day, while ministering to people and studying diligently the dynamics of the human mind in the hours between, fueled by his experiences as a Pastor and Counselor. The question, “Why do some people change easily while others struggl
