Growing up I always thought that I wanted to be a teacher. In elementary school I had some of the most incredible teachers that really impacted my life in a positive way. Thinking ahead to what I wanted to be as an adult, I wanted to teach and to be that positive impact on another child. But as I got older, my love for teaching began to diminish. I still loved kids but being in a classroom wasn’t what I wanted to do. There was a period of time where I was lost on what I wanted to do. But I knew that I wanted to do something that involved helping other people. My freshman year my aunt passed away from colon cancer. Although everything about her passing was extremely sad, it was an eye opener for me. I got the privilege of being involved though her process; from her first CT scan to her last time at the hospital. And the thing that really stuck out to me the most was how kind each and every one of her nurses was. After my aunt had passed, I realized that I wanted to be a nurse. I felt that if those nurses could make an impact on me I could do the same for other people. The kind of nurse I want to be is a Geriatric Oncology nurse- meaning that I want to work with older people who have cancer. Most people want to work in pediatric or labor and delivery, but that’s not who I am. My heart is with the old people, and I hope whoever I may come across, I can be a positive light in their life.
