Eric Hartman is a collaborative thought leader in management, leadership, and higher education, known for guiding institutions through strategic transformation with integrity, vision, and a sense of humor. He believes that leaders make the road by walking together with their community—building trust, fostering engagement, and aligning purpose with action.
With over 30 years of experience across student affairs, operations, teaching, governance, hospitality, healthcare, nonprofits, associations, and enterprise risk management, Hartman’s career is defined by building exemplary models that elevate organizational effectiveness. His work has shaped frameworks now used by over 150 universities, including a student engagement experience highlighted by the National Survey for Student Engagement, a model enterprise risk program featured by the Association of Governing Boards, and a national blueprint for addressing interpersonal violence through Culture of Respect.
Hartman has held senior leadership roles for 20 years, first at the University of the South, including Vice President and Dean positions. Currently, he serves as Chief Risk Officer at the University of Denver. In this role, he provides strategic oversight of enterprise risk, internal audit, equal opportunity and Title IX, campus safety, international health and safety, and regulatory compliance, ensuring these functions are integrated into the university’s broader planning and decision-making processes.
In each role, he has advised university presidents and boards on governance, strategic planning, and risk-informed decision-making, helping institutions navigate complexity with clarity and collaboration.
