Erica Wieting
Denton, Texas
I am currently in my senior year at the University of North Texas in Denton as a photojournalism major. I am minoring in both the social sciences and art history.
My college career began at Oklahoma State University in 2011 as a graphic design major with a minor in marketing. The background I gained while taking classes at OSU provided me with a strong foundation in designing, which I have carried with me throughout my experiences as a photojournalist at UNT.
I started working at my current job with the North Texas Daily, UNT’s campus newspaper, at the beginning of 2015 as a staff writer and photographer. During this time, we went to print two times a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the end of the spring semester I was promoted to a senior staff position for the summer, during which we produced a monthly magazine.
I am now the features editor at the Daily. We have moved to a digital-first format but still come out with print issues once a week on Thursdays. Working with the Daily has been an incredible learning experience, as it has allowed me to gain real-world experience in the world of journalism.
I also freelance design and photography, as these are skills I value and would like to continue to improve.
After I graduate in May of 2016, it is my goal to work full-time for a newspaper or a magazine. My ultimate dream is to be a traveling photojournalist for a publication like National Geographic, as I have a deep interest in representing various cultures around the world and featuring people in a new light.
