The biggest strategy that I have re-learned in this course is the idea of "learning the students profile" prior to labeling them. I have always been told throughout practicum and teacher's college that we should learn who the whole child is first thing and then decide from there how we are going to proceed. I've always had an idea of how to support students with special needs but now I know and understand how to support these students; additional time, quiet space, TRIBES, use of technology, supports i.e. SEAC, the community, the Government, the Board. Through taking this course it made me feel confident that I will now be able to better support my students with special needs in my practice.
Being respectful, encouraging, supportive and a great role model have always been something I strive to be, however in terms of this course these simple words have grown to sustain a deeper more special meaning. I have also learned that modelling certain behaviours that we want our students to portray is definately an important part of our job as teachers. I think if we model being empathetic, caring, proper sentence structure, social interactions, etc., our students - differently-abled or not will learn and model themselves. Above all this course has taught me that what will work for one student will not necessarily work for the next student. We are all unique individuals and deserve to be treated as one.
