IT in Atlanta, Georgia
As a lover of all things technology oriented, I don't view working in IT as a job so much as getting the opportunity to do what I love on a daily basis. The midnight phone calls, the weekend warrior sessions at the data center; these are not hardships but music. As we all know, music feeds the soul. This love affair with computers started at an early age, so I am more than a little biased.
That being said, my time in the business has taught me that technology is simply not a drop-in replacement for good processes based on weighted input from those that do the processes daily. Technology best serves to automate well-formed processes: this is usually to reduce human error or to scale up the activity. Implementing bad processes with new technology or failing to redesign existing processes with the advent of new systems will usually manifest as disappointment, in one form or the other, with the project.
