Eva Moskowitz
Eva Moskowitz, a Harlem resident and mother of three, is Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Success Charter Network, which opens and manages charter schools in New York City. In August 2006, Moskowitz founded Harlem Success Academy, hailed by NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein as “one of the best charter schools in the country,” and cited by NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg for its “amazing performance.” In 2009, The New York Times ranked Harlem Success Academy #1 out of 3,500 public schools in the New York State in math. Moskowitz has since opened eight more Success Academies, which serve more than 3600 children in Harlem, the South Bronx, Brooklyn, and the Upper West Side. Success Charter Network plans to open 40 schools in NYC over the next decade in August 2011.
A former New York City Council Member and Chair of the Council’s Education Committee, Moskowitz held more than 100 oversight hearings; no aspect of education – from toilet paper to teacher quality – was too insignificant or too controversial to be explored. She remains a forceful advocate for education. As a New York City public school graduate, Eva has returned to her roots in teaching to implement all she learned while visiting hundreds of New York City’s 1,300 public and charter schools. After completing her B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. in American History at Johns Hopkins University, Ms. Moskowitz was a history professor and taught civics at Prep for Prep, a program for gifted minority students.
