Good question! One I find myself asking increasingly as I get older. Going to get my head examined one of these days to see if I can find out what happened to my memory...

First and foremost, I'm a lover of words, the music they can make and what a challenge it is to get them in the right order.

I mostly write funny crime novels, but have also ventured into historical, romantic and suspense fiction as well as short fiction and non-fiction. At the last count, I've had 20 novels published, 18 traditionally and 2 self-published after I declined my publisher's last contract in 2010 and decided to turn indie. It's not a decision I've had cause to regret, especially as (for the first time in my life!) I'm now able to write full time.

WHAT DO I LIKE ABOUT BEING AN INDIE?

The short answer is: Everything. I love the camaraderie of the indie world and how we all help one another. If you're new to self-publishing, there are a number of authors whose blogs I can recommend;

jakonrath.blogspot.com, kriswrites.com, deanwesleysmith.com, thecreativepenn.com, davidgaughran.co.uk, molliegreene.com, annerallen.com.

They should keep you occupied for a while! Don't forget to also check out kdp.amazon.com's Community Pages for advice on all sorts of things to do with being an indie. Kindleboards.com (Writers' Cafe), is another rich source of information.

I love the control I have over everything to do with my books. Gone are the days of receiving a pat on the head and being told to 'Run along' (not in so many words, perhaps, but that's what it felt like whenever I had what I considered a pertinent suggestion to put forward). I decide on my books' prices, when to publish, where to publish, when to put them on special offer. I decide what categories they're to go under, what keywords I select and if and when to offer a freebie.
