Evan A. Shields

Evan A. Shields is a 9th grade math teacher at Banneker High School in College Park, GA. At Banneker he has also served as ninth grade math content leader, Student Government Association advisor, and served on the school’s Title I Advisory Board. He has received the "Most Creative & Inspiring Educator" award and the "A.I.M. High!" award from his colleagues for both his teaching and leadership.
A 2012 corps member with Teach For America, Evan currently serves as president of the Black Male Leadership Association of Teach For America (BMLA), an organization of 45 black male educators transforming the lives of over 4,800 students across 5 metro Atlanta school districts. Through BMLA Evan continues to mentor at-risk young men across the city.
In 2013, he served as a Policy, Advocacy & Organizing Fellow with Leadership For Educational Equity, working directly with Atlanta Public Schools and elected members of the Atlanta Board of Education to streamline that district’s public policy and community outreach.
Evan’s work has been featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the City of Atlanta’s Channel 26 broadcasting, and national Teach For America campaigns. Evan is a LEE African-American Political Leaders fellow, Atlanta RISE! Leadership Fellow, and founding board member of TFA’s Policy Leadership Initiative. He is also an active member of the Young Democrats of Atlanta, the Georgia Association of Educators, the UVa Club of Atlanta, and a volunteer with the Virginia Alumni Admissions Network.
Evan holds a B.A. in Political & Social Thought from the University of Virginia, where he wrote his thesis on urban economic development and minority entrepreneurship. While at Virginia, Evan was elected student-body Vice-President and founded the first collegiate chapter of the 100 Black Men, Inc. in Virginia.
A native of Birmingham, AL, Evan currently resides in Atlanta, GA and is a member of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. In his spare time, he enjoys singing, song-writing, and playing guitar.
