As the daughter of a lifetime restaurateur, my mother, she instilled in me the importance of strong public relations and communication skills. As I began my journey into the field of science I quickly realized the value of what my mother had taught me. There is no replacement for one’s experiences in life but I gain great pleasure in working to provide similar experiences and knowledge to my peers who did not grow up in the environment that I did.
My academic career has provided me an excellent basis for fostering my desire to provide guidance to my peers both in and out of the classroom. Through my extensive psychology coursework, I gained knowledge of the intricate workings of group dynamics as well as a basis of knowledge of what is required of a strong leader. Equally, I have sought out experiences as a graduate student that have gained me exposure to the development and execution of course curriculums, continued growth of communication skills and career development. Beyond the traditional classroom, I also participate in several committees and programs that allow for me to continue to grow my own communication and leadership skills as well as provide guidance to undergraduate and graduate level students. As a member of the San Antonio Science Café and the Mind Science Foundation I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge with scientists from other fields of study as well as individuals with no scientific background. I serve as the student representative on the Committee for Communicating Science (UTHSCSA), which has provided me with many opportunities develop workshops to increase trainee communication skills and career development opportunities.
Currently, I serve as the director and have been instrumental in the creation and progression of the trainee led group, Trainee Meetings Outside the Box (T-MOB). This group has been extremely well received amongst graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The mission of TMOB is to provide a structured setting for the discussion and development of scientific communication skills for students and post-doctoral fellows at UTHSCSA. Most recently, I serve as a member of the ASBMB science outreach committee. As a member I have had the exciting opportunity to work with many like-minded scientists on the development and implementation of multiple science outreach programs. This experience inspired me to purse an ASBMB science outreach seed grant, awarded November 2013, for the ex
