Throughout his career, F. Chris Garcia continued to engage in research and publication while also taking on administrative responsibilities. He was the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1987 to 1990, returning to the political science faculty afterward. However, his expertise was repeatedly sought, leading to his appointment as interim Provost twice and eventually as the University of New Mexico president from 2002 to 2003. As President, Garcia demonstrated effective leadership and became the first Hispanic American to hold this prestigious position at UNM.

Garcia's exceptional contributions to academia and relentless pursuit of excellence have not gone unnoticed, as he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his illustrious career. The accolades he has received are a testament to his dedication and impact on the fields of political science and higher education.

Some of the distinguished awards and honors bestowed upon Garcia include induction into the Silver Horizons Albuquerque Hall of Fame in 2009, the Distinguished Service Award from the North Central Association Higher Learning Commission in 2007, the Bernard S. Rodey Award for Educational Leadership from the UNM Alumni Association in 2004, and the Governor's Distinguished Public Service Award from the State of New Mexico in 2003. His exceptional service to the academic community earned him the Franklin J. Goodnow Award for Distinguished Service from the American Political Science Association in 2001. Additionally, in 1997, he received the University of New Mexico Alumni Association Zia Award for Outstanding UNM Alumni. Garcia's achievements have also earned him recognition in prestigious publications such as Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who Among Hispanic Americans.
