I was born in Bogota, Colombia in August 1998. I was one of two siblings from an immigrant household. Our family came to Canada in 2004 and have been a Canadian immigrant since 2008. At the age of 9 I started competitive swimming and even though it has been a huge part of my life I was never amazing at it, however I made it a focus to always do better every day. Ever since I was little, I always had a business mind set and would make lemonade stands and garage sales with my toys. Since then I always admired entrepreneurs and strived to become one. During this time I knew how to speak Spanish but I didn’t know how to read and write which meant that every Friday I would have Spanish classes at night which made me fall in love with not only my language but my culture. This is also where the love of teaching started from watching my teacher make learning fun. This ability was something I admired but at the time didn’t know it was a job that I could achieve or even want to achieve. During my grade 11 year I started a business program with a crazy idea and even though it ended up failing I learned valuable things about how to start a business and this knowledge gave me connection to future endeavors. Today I call my business Nando Loco, a social enterprise that uses different projects to help out the Wayuu community (indigenous people of this region) in Rioacha, Colombia. Even though it hasn’t always been a success it has been a great journey and can’t wait to continue. In September of 2016 I started at Laurentian University as an International Management student and with the option of various electives to choose from. I decided to take Spanish as an elective which at the time I took as joke class, but I started to enjoy it and study it much more. I kept taking Spanish courses in my second year which later realized that my path was to teach Spanish because as an immigrant I never had a chance to learn my culture and language and the more courses I took the more I learned about myself and the more I wanted to study which made me realize that concurrent education was also my path of choice. Since making this transition I have worked in summer camps with the goal to be teaching various sports to kids of all ages. Super excited to see the doors that open in the future with Spanish and education as my degrees coming out of Laurentian.
