Journalist in Miami, FL
Hi! My name is Franklin White, I'm very inquisitive, I love telling stories, and I love to talk, and when you tie all of that together, you get a guy who is currently living out my dream job as an on-air News Reporter, working in Miami, FL.
I'm originally from Birmingham, AL., and graduated with my Bachelor's degree from The University of Alabama (Roll Tide!), with a major in Broadcast Journalism, and a minor in Communications Studies in 2009.
After graduating, my career took me all across the southeast. Starting in Albany, GA., working at WFXL-TV, then in Huntsville, AL., working at WAFF-TV, and finally in Miami, FL., where I currently work at WSVN-TV.
Once I began working in Miami, I began to face a lot of challenges, including losing both my parents at different times, which put me in a deep depression. Through that time, I began seeing a therapist and became a mental health advocate, and ever since it's become my goal to spread awareness about taking mental health seriously, especially within the black and LGBTQ community.
I began to speak out about mental health because I noticed people had a hard time understanding that I suffered from any type of depression based on seeing me on television and winning EMMY's, but on the inside, I was suffering in silence, until I received help, and I knew others out there may be going through the same thing.
So when I decided to go back to school, I applied to Full Sail University, to pursue a degree in the New Media Journalism Master's program.
Through the program, I began to make mental health/depression the focus of my final project and the topic of most of my course work.
So far, I've gotten the chance to sit down with and interview mental health professionals, and people suffering from depression, which has been such a rewarding experience.
My goal now is to open a non-profit for people of color and in the LGBTQ community to have the opportunity to speak to therapists, free of charge.
