Fieke Geerts
After finishing a Masters degree in International Business Studies in the Netherlands, Fieke has worked mainly in the not-for-profit sector for 10 years. With a strong interest in cultural diversity, social justice & human rights, Fieke has been involved in many community projects ranging from behaviour change & capacity building programs with ethnic groups in Amsterdam to setting up a sustainable fair trade business model for Hmong women in Thailand, and has co-ordinated many cultural festivals in the Netherlands aimed at a broad public and with a community focus. In 2004, Fieke started up her own foundation in West-Java with the aim to increase the overall well-being and future opportunities of the children by providing & facilitating education. She further produced a documentary about an Australian - Indonesian art exchange, broadcasted by the ABC in 2007.
The impact of the environmental degradation and looming Climate Change on social justice & equity issues all around the world made Fieke a passionate environmentalist focussing on sustainable communities and creating awareness. In her role as production coordinator for Digital Eskimo, an agency working on projects for NGOs focusing on online community engagement, online campaigning and community capacity building platforms.
She has worked for the Australian Conservation Foundation as NSW GreenHome coordinator, designing and implementing environmental educational programs to achieve behaviour change & offer solutions towards a more sustainable way of living and sustainable communities. At the Nature Conservation Council, she organised the Roadshow through regional NSW around the campaign '100% Ready for a transition to Clean Energy', which has been nominated for an award.
Fieke is currently working for the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage on the Ethnic Communities Sustainable Living Project and responsible for appropriate and accessible environmental programs for ethnic communities in Sydney.
Besides her job, Fieke is has been one of the main organisers of the Sydney Latin American Film Festival for five years, a not-for-profit organisation which showcases a wide variety of independent films and documentaries from Latin America. She is also currently undertaking a Masters in International Urban and Environmental Management.
