Auscultation of Heart Sounds and Murmurs — Easy Way!

Listening to heart sounds and cardiac murmurs and identifying them correctly is a nightmare for every final year medical student. Nevertheless, it is one of the most basic skills a doctor should have.

Any medical officer is expected to know it thoroughly to diagnosing patients with abnormal heart sounds and murmurs and refer them for tertiary care. That makes it is of great importance a medical student to learn and a doctor to update the knowledge in both normal and abnormal cardiac sounds and murmurs.

First and second heart sounds are normal. Third heart sound can be either normal or abnormal. Fourth heart sound is always abnormal. There are different areas to listen to the heart sounds over the chest (precordium). A heart sound is best heard in particular area.
