For over three decades, Tim Gordon's enduring love of film has kept him at the forefront of cinematic leadership, serving in various roles and passionately supporting all aspects of the industry.
Gordon has dedicated his life to film, educating future generations and changing the portrayal of African Americans on screen and in Hollywood's executive suites.
He began his career as a film critic in 1992. Gordon was later inspired to create The Black Reel Awards in 2000 to honor African-Americans in feature, independent, and television films.
Gordon was named President of Washington (D.C.) Area Film Critics (WAFCA) in 2002. The 46-member association examines issues about critics throughout the industry and annually honors the year’s best films and performances.
In 2004, Gordon founded the Foundation for the Advancement of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF), which was later rebranded as the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film in 2015. Its mission is to target, identify, and prepare candidates who will represent the next generation of filmmakers and potential film executives. Its two signature programs, Reel Kids, and the Producer’s Institute continue the important work for the next generation.
Gordon created the movie brand, “FilmGordon” in 2008 to consolidate his film content and social media platforms under one umbrella. Gordon joined the nation’s largest film critics association, the 600-member Critics Choice Association (CCA) in 2013. In 2018, Gordon launched the Lakefront Film Festival. The event moved to Washington, DC, and rebranded as the LightReel Film Fest in 2022.
Gordon was invited to join the Board of Directors for the Film Festival Alliance (FFA). In addition, he also serves on FAAAF’s Board of Directors.
Over his distinguished career, Gordon has served as a consultant, panelist, and film festival jury member for several festivals and film series, including the Virgin Island International Film Festival, Over-the-Rhine Film Festival, Centre Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Oxford Film Festival, Milwaukee Film Festival, and the DC Black Film Festival.
Gordon has been a film critic for WETA-TV (PBS) since 2005 and also hosts the weekly film show, Keeping It Reel with FilmGordon on 96.3 HD4 on DC Radio. His work has also appeared in USA Today, and Variety Magazine, and has been a guest on Howard University’s Evening Exchange (WHUT-TV), WHUR’s The Daily Drum with Harold Fisher, and Wake Up with WURD with Solomon Jones.
