T. Douglas Reilly
Douglas Reilly – Natural Philosopher (physicist - physics is NATURE in Greek). Field: Nuclear Safeguards, Nonproliferation, and Arms Control. As long as I can remember, I have tried to become a renaissance man; my dad called it adding strings on your fiddle.
I'm a 100% volunteer wherever I am: Los Alamos Historical Museum Docent, Maine Coastal Botanical Garden, Santa Fe Kitchen Angels (cook), Santa Fe Alliance for Science mentor and science fair judge, and a political trouble maker.
Principal employment: Staff Member (retired) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Other organizations: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria; Joint Research Centre of EURATOM (JRC), Ispra, Italy; US Department of Energy (DOE), Washington, DC; October 1969 – August 2007. New Mexico Academy of Science and Math, Santa Fe, NM – teach physics in small prep school, 2007-2008.
Work areas: Nondestructive Assay R&D, nuclear material measurement, training, technical writing and editing, first line supervision, travel, public speaking, and whatever else needs to be done.
Position at IAEA: Senior Safeguards Training Officer, P-5, 1998 – 2002. Teach international safeguards, nuclear material assay, and the Treaty on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to IAEA Safeguards Inspectors. My major work at LANL was in the same field.
Volunteer Experience: ski patroller, winter search and rescue, cub scout leader, recreational soccer coach, history museum docent, botanical garden greeter and shuttle driver, homeowners associations (NM and ME) president, science fair judge, student tutor in science and math, etc. Causes Douglas cares about: education, all nature (physics), politics, people. Languages: English, Italian, Spanish, German, French,Travelish in others, Basic English. Education: Amherst College, Bachelor of Arts (A.B. cum laude 1964), the 7 liberal arts, major in physics and the 7 liberal arts, 1960 – 1964. Case Western Reserve University Ph.D. (1970) with major in physics.
Hobbies: reading, skiing, hiking, ham radio (K2ZMU), folk guitar and singing, news junky, languages, astronomy, nature, photography, i.e. whatever seems interesting.
