Fiona Dermody

I am an interdisciplinary O'Hare Humanities PhD Scholar at Dublin City University, Ireland. I am developing a digital system for public speaking from a Positive Computing perspective. My research has featured in a Human Computer Interaction course in Germany and a TEDx talk in Belgium.

Awards:

Best Student Paper Award at HUCAPP-VISIGRAPP 2018 - Madeira.

In May 2018, I won the PhD Poster Competition at the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards Ceremony at the Royal Society, London. I was one of ten finalists selected from over 400 entries from the UK and Ireland.

I was an active member of Toastmasters International, a worldwide organisation that helps people develop their public speaking and leadership skills for over seven years. I served as President and Vice President of Education of a Toastmasters club in Dublin. These roles involved managing the educational, communication and leadership goals of twenty-five people.

In 2012, two speakers I coached participated in the Evaluation and Speech Contests for Ireland and the UK and both made the final 6 out of 6,700 speakers.

Another notable achievement was my engagement with the historical, successful Guinness World Record Attempt by the Irish Writers Centre on Bloomsday 2012 for the number of Irish writers reading consecutively from their own books. I facilitated the provision of a visual timing device to ensure that the stringent timing requirements for the 28 hour record attempt could be met. Readers included Seamus Heaney, Roddy Doyle and Pat Boran.
