*Procedures and routines (classroom rituals, routines for writing and reading conferences)
*Finding out about students and students finding out about the school (questionnaires, surveys, scavenger hunts)
*Creating our Writer's Notebook and using it for warm-ups, lists, journal ideas, stories and more
*Creating our Reader's Folder and using it for: 1. Independent Book Project 1 (Your Choice), Shared Class Novel 1 (Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli) and Independent Book Project 2 (Your Choice)
*For FILA students: Book Club #1 (students' choice) - reading comprehension and strategy activities, plus a final group research project
*For ELA students: Shared Class Novel 2 (The 39 Clues Book 1: The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan) - reading comprehension and strategy activities, plus a final group research project
*Learning about The 6 Traits of good writing and the 8 awesome reading strategies we use in Grade 6
*Learning how to set goals, specifically (but not only) for reading and writing
*Using the internet to create about.me pages and learning how to update our class and individual blogs (we will be blogging with other Grade 6 classes here in Fredericton and all around the world!)
*Learning about the writing process (prewriting, drafting, writing, editing, proofreading and publishing) and how to use graphic organizers and creating 6 word memoirs
*Creating rubrics together for what makes good speaking and listening skills - and practicing these skills!
*Creating our first major writing assignment. It will be on the theme of INDIVIDUALITY but students will have a lot of choice regarding what they do (letter, memoir, narrative, biography)
*and more! :) Note: This brings us to the end of December.
