Fiyaz Mughal
Director in the United Kingdom
Fiyaz Mughal has dedicated much of his working life to serving the voluntary sector, both in an advisory capacity and through founding and managing several social enterprises. His endeavours in this arena have been such that he was awarded an OBE in 2009 in the Queen's birthday honours list, with particular reference to his work in the sphere of conflict reduction and social cohesion. Since first coming to the UK as a refugee from Uganda, Fiyaz Mughal has been passionate about learning how societies and communities can come together and adapt to new situations.
In 2006, Fiyaz Mughal established the social enterprise of which he remains director to this day. Faith Matters uses conflict resolution tools and identifies similarities to bring people of all faiths and of no faith together. Faith Matters also works with the struggle against issues such as violent extremism, hate crime and discrimination. The organisation works mainly within the UK, but has also been instrumental in tackling religious extremism in other countries including Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria.
In 2011, Fiyaz Mughal launched a second social enterprise, TELL MAMA, with MAMA as an acronym for Monitoring Anti-Muslim Attacks. TELL MAMA acts as a national monitoring service within the UK for crimes against Muslims or against those perceived to be Muslims. Through providing an efficient and reliable national service, TELL MAMA is able to use data analysis to work with partner agencies, including police forces and the government, to provide support to victims and witnesses in the areas it is most needed.
Fiyaz Mughal has worked a number of prestigious statutory roles as well as his tireless voluntary work. He was a City Councillor in both Oxford and London for many years. He also worked as a lecturer in Biology as well as Health Education and later Access to Management, working in the City & Islington College and the Oxford College of Further Education. In his capacity as an advisor he has previously worked with the Home Office and the House of Commons.
Fiyaz Mughal is also the Founder of the national No2H8 Crime Awards which brings together all of the major hate crime monitoring agencies in England to honour those individuals and organisations who counter racism, hatred and prejudice on an annual basis.
