Floyd Starnes
For the past six years, Floyd Starnes has led Kemp Mill Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, as its principal. The pre-K to 5th grade institution has received recognition from the Spanish embassy for its dual language program; it is part of the selective International Spanish Academies (ISA) program. Floyd Starnes has represented the school and its district at several ISA conferences. Committed to inclusiveness in the educational environment, Mr. Starnes has also completed a number of professional training programs in cultural competency, diversity, and race.
Floyd Starnes pursued his bachelor of arts in theater at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, where he had a lead role in the musical Hair and sang with the UMD chorus at high-profile venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Symphony Hall in London. He subsequently completed a master of education with a TESOL focus at Boston University. Currently pursuing an doctor of education at George Washington University, he is studying educational leadership as it relates to English language learner performance. He has extensive experience training student teachers in a university setting, and has led workshops in reading instruction and assessment design. He has also supervised and evaluated the classroom performance of teachers and support staff members.
