Fleur Melker
Student Teacher in Nederland
Hi all! I am Fleur (25). At the moment I am a student teacher at Leiden University/International School of The Hague. In a little under a year I hope to graduate and become a qualified teacher of English :) I previously graduated from Leiden University with a bachelor's degree in English language and culture and a master's degree in English literature. I've had a bit of a gap between my master's and my teacher training, so I'm trying hard to adjust to student life again. I've mastered the sleep depravity thing quite quickly though...
Relatively late in my life I decided to become a teacher: last January to be precise. After three years of temp jobs and internships, I noticed I missed working with my subject (English). One of my friends just started the teacher training course at Leiden University and was so enthusiastic I decided to take the leap. No regrets so far! The International School of The Hague is a great and fun place to work. Teaching is relatively new to me (besides an occasional summer school and tutoring), so it really helps that I feel comfortable at my internship school.
As I just said, I teach at an international school, where CLIL is a big thing. After all, the language of instruction is English for every subject, and this is not the mother tongue of all the students. Therefore, I look forward to learning more about this concept, which is not always clear to me yet in the context of teaching English. This telecollaboration project seems a great way to learn more about CLIL. Six know more than one!
I live on my own in Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands. For 99% of my life Rotterdam has been my home town, and I believe it is the best place to live :) My family consists of my parents, sister (23) and me. My sister still lives at home.
When I'm not studying or teaching, I love to read (Harry Potter is king!), bake (my roommates seem to think I'm quite good) and watch rugby (proud supporter of Wales). I look forward to getting to know you, your country and your experiences as teachers-to-be. I'm sure we can learn a lot from each other!
Talk to you later,
All the best,
Fleur
PS: I don't have a blog, so I linked my Facebook page ;)
