How Do I Fill Out a 1099 Form and What Is It?
You've definitely heard of IRS Form 1099 if you're starting out as a freelancer or if your small business hires outside labor. But exactly what is it? How do you file it, too?.
A 1099 tax form: what is it?
An "information filing form," or 1099, is used to record non-salary income to the IRS for the purpose of filing federal taxes. The 1099 NEC is the most common of the 20 1099 variations. You must fill out a 1099-NEC if you paid an independent contractor more than $600 in a fiscal year.
Tax dividends, prize winners, interest income, IRA distributions, state tax refunds, other government payments, the sale of personal property, and even the cancellation of credit card debt are additional sources of income for people. You may read more about the several forms of Form 1099 on which these types of income are reported here.
We'll concentrate on Form 1099-NEC as it's the one that small business owners will use the most frequently.
Who is issued 1099?
1099 should be given to all partnerships and contractors that worked for your company for more than $600.
Who is required to complete a 1099 form?
You must provide the contractor with a 1099-NEC if your company employed them and paid them more than $600 in a calendar year. To put it another way, the payer completes 1099.
How to submit a Form 1099
Form 1099 comes in two versions, Copy A and Copy B.
If you hire an independent contractor, you must report what you pay them on Copy A, and submit it to the IRS. The identical information must be reported on Copy B, which you must then give to the contractor.
You do not have to send a Form 1099, Copy B to the IRS if you are an independent contractor and get one from a customer. You report the income listed in Copy B on your personal income tax return.
