Why I Chose high school sports - I am Felicia Laguerre Owens and I have an endeavor that is near and dear to my heart - photographing African American urban sports. I feel that African American urban students need positive exposure, which is overlooked by the mainstream media. The students need to know that they are valued citizens of society.
Who Inspires Me - African American photographers Moneta Sleet, Jr. and Gordon Parks motivate me. They were two pioneers in photography. They covered African Americans in the 1960's and beyond. I feel that sports photojournalism in the African American community is greatly beneficial for all involved. I was also considering which African American women inspire me. That's how I came up with the pseudonym LeontyneAlthea, which is a combination of the names of famous opera singer Leontyne Price, and famous tennis player Althea Gibson. I have used this pseudonym as my email for over twelve years.
MY TARGET AUDIENCE for Irvington High School NJ Sports and LeontyneAltheaOnline.com is students, parents, family, friends, alumni, coaches, and school administrators by providing exposure, in an effort to build positive self-esteem through exposure through media for which your continued support is greatly needed. This is our community and we should show an active interest in where we come from.
