I was born in the seaport of Livorno, part of the Grand Duchy of Toscana. I studied law at the university of Pisa, but gave it up in favour of politics and literature. My debt to Byron is immeasurable. My first novel was La Battaglia di Benevento.
With Giuseppe Mazzini & Carlo Bini I started a newspaper, L'Indicatore Livornese. The authorities of the Grand Duchy of Toscana shut us down after 48 issues and I was banished to Montepulciano.
