Fred Russell
Investor in Richmond, Virginia
I invest in small, growing companies in the Southeast. "Freshwater investing" is somewhat different than "saltwater" (Boston or San Francisco ) investment alternatives. We invest in businesses that differentiate themselves without using advanced technology. There are plenty of growth opportunities outside of leading-edge technology - and they're easier for us to understand. Our entrepreneurs want to own more of their company, so raising less capital from us and getting their business profitable is critical. My fund, VCP, invests in an eclectic mix of opportunities including: cell towers, publishing, health care, car washes, specialty insurance, timberland and even a flea market - all close to our home (and freshwater) port, Richmond, Virginia.
Outside the office, I’d rather have my feet in the Loyolhana (in Westmoreland County, PA), fishing for “tiger trout” – cross between brook and brown trout, only found in this stream.
