Hello! My name is Gabrielle Hoggarth, and I am a fourth-year university student receiving my undergraduate degree from the University of Guelph in Biological Sciences and minoring in French language. My academic interests include nutritional science, animal science, and French culture. Earlier in my undergraduate career, I was an aspiring vet student and have worked with a variety of veterinarians and pet care professionals to make this dream a reality. As I continued with my studies, French culture, literacy, and art helped me discover a new passion of mine: human studies and youth education. I have been since dabbling these passions of mine in my other interests, including recreational painting, writing, and fostering pets to be rehomed. As a woman in science, I look up to other successful women scientists, such as Margaret Mead, who was a controversial, yet powerful academic that influenced the sexual revolution despite Western traditions in the 1960s. Just as she was able to effectively communicate her research to a variety of audiences, I aspire to become an educator for children and youth in my community. I have been working diligently towards this dream by working for the Indigenous Student Centre as a Student Peer Helper with the University of Guelph, as well as privately tutoring students between the ages of 3 and 16 years old. A couple fun facts about me: one being that I am an identical twin to my sister, Jessica Hoggarth. Second, we are both Kawartha Nishnawbe First Nation of Burleigh Falls, Ontario. Our community was created in the early 1900s, with only four other families, from Curve Lake First Nation as a result of losing our Indian status through enfranchisement. Currently, my family and other Kawartha Nishnawbe are protesting the reconstruction of the Burleigh Falls dam, as our community was not properly consulted by Parks Canada because we were not recognized as an Indian Act band. It is through these injustices, as well as my unquenchable thirst for knowledge, that inspires me to pursue a career in youth guidance and education so that they may also find their voice.
