When I was five years old I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to go to college, become a doctor, and get employed at the hospital Doogie Howser worked at so I could make him fall in love with me. I was five, I didn't understand Doogie Howser was a fictional character. He was the man of my dreams and I was going to marry him. And then the show got cancelled.
My dream of becoming a doctor soon died out but aspirations of college remained. The notion of a higher education had been chiseled in my little child's brain, by me, my parents, or Doogie Howser, I don't remember.
Being the oldest of three kids from a working class family, I had to figure out how I was going to get to college. So after four years of indentured servitude and a bout of unemployment, I finally made it. I got to college. And now, now I'm a 27-year-old college senior.
And I don't know where to go from here.
