The natural world has always been a fixation of mine. As a child, nothing would make me happier than wandering the woods. To me, the smallest patch of trees was an isolated forest full of mysteries to explore. I would drink in its sights to my little heart's content. It wasn't until I got a bit older, that I started to realize that the world was not full of pristine wilderness and that what I had seen as a child was only the small bits left. It was around that time when I learned about deforestation, global warming, and the multitude of other threats to the natural world. At first, I couldn't understand why the world was like this. How could people just let the natural world be destroyed? I villainized anyone I thought was destroying nature, from corporations to hunters. I stuck with that attitude for a while, until about middle school, when I then started to understand more about how the world works. I knew that there were definitely people and corporations that wantonly pollute and consume the environment and its resources, but I also started to realize that almost everything we do contributes to environmental degradation in some way. Instead of feeling bad about this, I realized that the best way to solve this is to find ways to limit our destruction of the planet. From there I began to think of ways this could be done. As I got older my understanding of the world increased, and I became more and more convinced that I wanted to find a way to help the environment. In high school, I took classes, like AP Environmental Science, and joined clubs, like the Environmental Club, which furthered my interest and understanding of this subject. Towards my last few years of high school, I began to focus on helping the environment by focusing on sustainable agriculture. That leads me to the present. I am currently a student at UGA, majoring in Agriculture and Environmental Science, and am trying to find a career path where I can increase food sustainability while also reducing the negative impact agriculture has on the environment.
