Gareth Manning

Cleardale, AB

My name is Gareth Manning and I am currently a middle school (6-9) teacher at Menno Simons Community School in the remote Northern Alberta hamlet of Cleardale (pop. 400), part of the Peace River School Division #10 family of schools.

I am extremely passionate about teaching and life-long learning. I believe schools must be sites for creative expression and self-discovery, where students are guided to become increasingly self-directed in thinking critically about how, with whom, and why they will have a positive impact on the world as active global citizens. As an educator, I see my role as more of a learning coach or guide than as a teacher in the traditional sense. I believe my job is to understand my students as unique individuals with varying motivations, interests, aptitudes, ethnocultural backgrounds, and levels of prior achievement, and to orchestrate personalized and collaborative learning experiences to maximize their intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

I have also taught for three years in Miki-shi, Japan, and had brief stints in Kingston, Jamaica and Toronto, Ontario.
