Holding a bachelor's in microbiology from the University of Manitoba, Gary Harding subsequently earned a doctor of medicine (MD) and completed an internal medicine residency at the Canadian school. Dr. Gary Harding later completed a post-doctoral fellowship in medical ethics at the University of Chicago and, in 2006, began working as a medical oncologist with CancerCare Manitoba, the Health Sciences Center, and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. He maintained his role with all three agencies until 2015, during which time he also served as an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Medicine.

Supplementing his practical and educational medical pursuits, Dr. Gary Harding holds membership with the Canadian Medical Association, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. Recently, he has also expanded upon his academic profile by completing the Academic Health Sciences Leadership program at the George & Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation and earning a master's in health economics, policy, and management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
