Gary Lee
I got my start working as an intern in 2005 transcribing charts for jazz guitar great, Lee Ritenour. The following year, I was prepping charts for Lee’s upcoming recording sessions for his album, Smoke ‘N Mirrors. Those four days at Sunset Sound in Hollywood would be the start of a 5 year “sink-or-swim” crash-course in music business and album production. In just those first four sessions, I was working alongside some of the greatest studio musicians in the world: Alex Acuña, Abraham Laboriel Sr., Vinnie Colaiuta, Brian Bromberg, Sheila E., Melvin Davis, Patrice Rushen, and Richard Bona, to name a few.
In the following years I worked on several important projects with Lee, most notably, Amparo (the classical cross-over record produced by Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin, featuring James Taylor, Reneé Fleming, Chris Botti, and Joshua Bell), Act Your Age (Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, produced by Lee Ritenour), and Lee Ritenour’s 6 String Theory (the superstar guitar collaboration record and guitar competition featuring 20 of the greatest guitarists alive, including Lee Ritenour, B.B. King, George Benson, Steve Lukather, John Scofield, Neal Schon, Joe Bonamassa, Andy McKee, and others). I went from an intern, to production coordinator, to tour manager, to playing guitar in Lee’s band in several clinics and concerts.
I’ve since gone on to perform on-stage with Alex Acuña, Melvin Davis, Annekei, Patrice Rushen, among others, as well as work alongside pianist/composer, John Beasley, on ABC’s Singing competition shows, Duets (2012), and Sing Your Face Off (coming Fall 2013).
I’ve worked in many different genres of music, however, fingerstyle acoustic guitar has always been my first passion. The acoustic guitar, for me, is unmatched by any other instrument in its ability to grab at the heart of the listener. I produced and released my first solo acoustic album in 2012 simply titled, The Acoustic Album. It contains 10 songs full of original acoustic guitar music chalked full of intricate fingerstyle guitar work intertwined with simple, yet beautiful melodies.
Through my experience in production and performing, I’ve developed a passion for helping other composers and artists capture that perfect acoustic guitar sound live on-stage and in the studio. If you have an upcoming project and would like to discuss working together, email me. I’m always looking to meet and work with other like-minded artists and musicians passion
