Gary Mitchell, Jr., a multi-hyphenate artist, regularly collaborates with renowned singers, instrumentalists, artists, and ensembles, throughout the world.
Gary debuted as Noah “Horse” T. Simmons in The Full Monty at The Clink Theatre, Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia; portrayed Jasbo Brown in Porgy and Bess at The Royal Danish Opera House-Copenhagen; and has been featured in myriad performances in Japan, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.
Mitchell has also been featured as a collaborative pianist, vocalist, conductor, and music director at myriad venues including: Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theatre, Lincoln Center, New Federal Theater, The Harlem Opera Festival, The United Nations, Teatro alla Scala, Dance Theater of Harlem, 54 Below, Opera Philadelphia, NAACP ACT-SO, Harlem Stage Theatre (Antigone in Ferguson), as Jimmy Powers in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, at Portland Stage Theatre, (the) Cape Playhouse, New London Playhouse, Syracuse Stage, and he frequents Barrington Stage Theatre, and he was Musical Director/Conductor in Purlie at Union County Performing Arts Center’s Hamilton Stage Theatre. He has also collaborated and performed with The New York Historical Society, Broadway Inspirational Voices, PBS, MTV, VH1, Steinway International, and Netflix, and he was associate music director in Tituss Burgess’s The Preacher’s Wife. He also won The 2025 Audelco Award for Outstanding Musical Director for his work in American Theatre Group’s production of Purlie.
Previously, Gary was a bass vocal artist at Houston Grand Opera, Artist-in-Residence at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church-Houston and Union Theological Seminary, and is currently Director of Music and Arts Administration at First AME Church: Bethel-Harlem. He is a member of the professoriate: Tougaloo College, Texas Southern University, and The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Houston, TX), and has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University and a guest performing artist at Yale University. He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music from Thee Jackson State University.
Gary is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc., PHA Aurora Lodge, a Life Member of Thee Jackson State University National Alumni Association, The National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM), The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), and Actor's Equity Association (AEA).
